I run a small cafe near a 24-hour bar, and honestly, the late-night crowd can be pretty wild. I’ve noticed that when the bar closes, I get a rush of customers looking for something to munch on while they sober up or celebrate.

I want to expand my snack menu for those night owls, but I’m not sure where to start. What types of snacks do other cafes or gas stations typically keep on hand that actually sell during those late-night hours? Chips and pretzels are great, but I feel like I need something a bit more exciting.

I’m also interested in hearing about any unique items you might have on your shelves that have become crowd favorites. Who knew a crazy flavor of popcorn might be the thing they can’t resist? Would love to hear your suggestions and what’s worked for you out there!

You are in the sweet spot. Late-night folks want something quick, salty, filling, portable, and a little exciting. C-stores and cafes are leaning into savory handhelds and bold flavors.

You're in the perfect spot. Late-night folks want something quick, salty, a little spicy or sweet, and easy to eat while walking back to their ride. Here’s what tends to sell and what’s worked for others near bars.

Top categories that move fast

Meat/jerky sticks and salami/meat sticks (single-serve): Super portable, high margin, and hits the salty + protein craving.

Microwavable or toasted handhelds: Frozen breakfast sandwiches, burritos, taquitos, or quesadillas you can heat quickly. People will happily pay $4–7.

Bold salty snacks: Flamin’ Hot chips, pork rinds, wasabi peas, chili-lime peanuts, or crazy-flavored popcorn. These stand out late at night.

Comfort sweets: Individually wrapped pastries, cookies, or gummy packs for the “I need sugar now” crowd.

Hydration & recovery: Bottled water, sports/electrolyte drinks, plus mints or gum—often bought together with snacks.
